Mumbai, India Factoid
About an hour's boat ride from Mumbai lies Elephanta Island (once known as Gharapuri, or "fortress city"). Up a steep incline on the island, and then accessible via three entrances, is a series of caves that boast elaborate rock sculptures detailing Hindu cosmology. Dedicated to the god Shiva, the carvings illustrate his tripartite essence, his marriage, and his androgynous nature. Believed to have been created anywhere from the 6th to the 8th centuries, the carvings are a stunning spectacle of art, archaeology and history. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the caves were defaced in the 16th century by Portuguese explorers, who also gave the island its current name, courtesy of a large stone elephant that once guarded the island and can now be found, restored, in Mumbai's Victoria Gardens.
