This long-established restaurant has returned to its original location at Kemps Corner and the regulars have come with it. Culinary pioneer Nelson Wang has been serving up top-notch Chinese dishes for two decades; the 2008 menu features dishes from Japan and Southeast Asia as well as Hong Kong and mainland China. Make a reservation if you hope to get a table here in the evening.

This popular Colaba restaurant transforms into a bar as the evening rolls on. There's ice-cold Kingfisher beer on tap and the jukebox features an eclectic selection of rock and pop records ­ Mondy's proudly advertises itself as the place 'to mix beer and music'. The food isn't bad either, though you'll have to arrive early to bag a table.

Reached through a blue-tiled Chinese gateway, China Gate is a handy option for shoppers on nearby Linking Road. Dishes from mainland China and Hong Kong are skilfully prepared, and the barbecued ribs are a treat. Look out for a few Thai dishes amongst the Chinese staples. Screens and Chinese calligraphy on the walls create a suitably oriental atmosphere.

CHOWPATTY. Decked out with paintings of Burmese monks, this bright, upbeat restaurant is phenomenally popular with families, particularly at weekends. The vegetarian menu takes in dishes from around the world, with everything from Indian dosas to Mexican nachos. Expect to queue if you don't have a reservation at the weekend. There's another branch on Linking Rd in Bandra.

According to legend, this grand Chinese restaurant at the Taj Mahal Palace was the first place in India to serve fiery Szechuan dishes from south-west China. Today, it still wins plaudits for the complex flavours of its Chinese and Cantonese cuisine. The lunchtime dim sum is particularly fine, but you'll need to reserve a table at weekends.
