A private competitor to the government-run CCIE, the Cottage Industries Exposition stocks a wide range of arts and crafts from around India, from Kashmiri carpets to Keralan wood carvings. Sales staff can be a little overbearing, but the selection of crafts and curios is impressive. There are two stores in the same building, with slightly different stock, plus another branch on Juhu Church Road in Juhu.

Founded in 1948 to promote Indian arts and crafts, this government-backed enterprise has arts and crafts from all over India, from hand-woven clothes and carpets to brass statues, inlaid marble and pearls, all at fair, fixed prices. If you have only half-an-hour to shop before catching a plane, come here.

The teachings of Mahatma Gandhi were the inspiration for this India-wide charitable organisation. Their Mumbai store sells a huge range of khadi (hand-woven fabrics) and other handicrafts produced by poor rural communities from all over India. Popular buys include woven wool shawls and kurtas ­ long shirts for men and women. This is also a great place to buy statues, carvings and metalware.

Colaba has become the place to buy designer home-ware and Ravissant is one of the most stylish places to shop. The shelves are piled high with vases, crockery, table linen and silverware. The highlights of the Ravissant collection are the inlaid and enamelled silver jugs, tea-sets and vases. This is the best of Indian design, combining traditional techniques and modern designs.
